Rainy days in Cornwall

It’s Easter school holidays, you’re going out and about in Cornwall but it’s raining. Sure, if it’s light rain then beaches and coastal attractions are fine but if it tips it down then here are recommendations for things to do on rainy days in Cornwall:

Cornwall Top 10 Holiday Recommendations for Rainy Days

Clearly, given that it’s called a top 10 list, the recommendations cover 10 attractions but, within the description of each, we also supply other suggestions. So, for example, if you’re heading for The Eden Project then why not try the Lost Gardens of Heligan nearby. If you’re visiting Tate St Ives, try the Barbara Hepworth Museum, too.

For quick reference, these are our choices:

The Eden Project

Tate St Ives

Truro Cathedral

Newquay Bluereef Aquarium

St Mawes Castle

China Clay Country Park

Lanhydrock House and Gardens

St Michael’s Mount

Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site

Lizard Lighthouse and Heritage Centre

If you bump into this post and have other recommendations, pls add below and we’ll update PictureTheUK. Thanks.

Plenty of people ask us this question in person.  Plenty of others ask Google.  Here’s our answer:

The short answer is that we’d recommend visiting any of the National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or major cities within the UK. Sure, it’s broad brush but after decades of UK travel, we’d suggest that any of the above will provide an extraordinary experience.

However, if you’re after more detail, here’s our list of Top 10 Places To Visit in England:

Top 10 Recommendations for Places To Visit in England

On the list are:

London

The Cotswolds AONB

Oxford

The South Devon AONB

Peak District National Park

Lake District National Park

East Sussex

North Yorkshire

Cornwall

Northumberland

We provide hundreds of Top 10 lists on PictureTheUK that offer our recommendations for places to visit, things to do etc in the UK. These are produced by region, county, National Park and so on. There are scores of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and National Scenic Areas (NSAs) within the UK.

To help you discover these areas, we’ve been adding quick guides to PictureTheUK. For example, here are some of the AONB quick guides that we’ve added for South East England:

Kent Downs AONB

High Weald AONB

Surrey Hills AONB

Sussex Downs AONB

East Hampshire AONB

Isle of Wight AONB

These AONBs cut across county boundaries and, in some cases, constitute National Parks. Clearly, given the terminology used, one thing that you’re guaranteed is natural beauty so our advice would be to plan trips to these destinations if you want to take a holiday or short break in the UK because you can’t really go wrong.  If you have recommendations for specific places to visit within these AONBs then please post below or e-mail james@picturetheuk.com. Thanks.

So, for example, we suggested St Ives, St Mawes and Port Isaac for destinations and the Camel Estuary, St Michael’s Mount and The Eden Project for attractions. The full list is here:

We’ve just completed our quick guide to Edinburgh.

In addition, for quick reference, we’ve created a top ten list for things to do in the city. These include the obvious tourist attractions such as Edinburgh Caslte and The National Gallery of Scoptland Complex in addition to outdoor activities such as a walk up Arthur’s Seat or Calton Hill. The full list is here:

Top Ten Things To Do in Edinburgh

Clearly, Edinburgh’s one of the UK’s most visited cities so there are plenty more attractions to enjoy other than those listed. Try The Camera Obscura and St Giles Cathedral, The Museum of Edinburgh and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. There are Lady Stair’s House/Writers’ Museum and John Knox’s House, a walk through the exquisite Georgian New Town or a visit to the underground world beneath The Royal Mile.

We’re adding attractions and recommendations to PictureTheUK every day so please post below if you have more or contact James Penman direct at james@picturetheuk.com. Thanks.
